DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Joe Myderwyk has lived in the Quinte area for almost 40 years. He grew up on a dairy farm as a kid, and it was there where he learned the value of an honest day’s work. He credits his determination and strong work ethic to his parents. He graduated from Prince Edward Collegiate Institute and went on to complete his Advanced Diploma in Business Technology / Communication and Information Systems at St. Lawrence College.

His career began with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, first as an IT Technician supporting technology in schools, and then continued as a Systems Analyst in a central systems support role for a few years. Joe went on to join the City of Belleville for 8 ½ years as an IT Systems Analyst, successfully moving forward several major IT initiatives across the City’s many business units. He joined the Belleville Police Service in 2015.

“A new opportunity presented itself where I could still continue to serve this community, but in a different capacity. I felt it was where I was needed most at the time.”

Currently, Joe leads the Information and Technology Services Unit for the Belleville Police Service, reporting directly to the Chief of Police.

“I have the privilege of leading a small team of talented individuals in delivering enterprise level solutions and providing extraordinary IT support to our Service, its members, and ultimately the community.”

Over the course of the past 6 ½ years with the Belleville Police Service, Joe has been part of moving forward several aspects of technology. One of the most challenging projects to date was overseeing all IT related aspects of the new police headquarters that opened in October 2020 including the seamless migration of a 911 dispatch center.

Joe and his team have been instrumental in delivering Belleville’s vision of a Mobile Connected Officer solution – a first in Canada. This change in ideology involves the use of an individually assigned smartphone as a replacement for the traditional computer in the car. The phones provide secure access to critical data sets, whether an officer is at the office, in the vehicle, or walking the beat.

“Many of the successful implementations that I have led or been a part of, have come from great partnerships, whether with vendors, community stakeholders, or other business units. I have been extremely fortunate in my career to have had some great mentors along the way to learn from.”

Joe has a small hobby farm in Prince Edward County where he resides with his wife and two daughters. When he is not at work, he can usually be found outdoors working on his farm.
