INFORMATION AND PRIVACY UNIT

Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act:

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act was enacted on January 1, 1991. The purpose of the Act is two-fold:

  • To provide the right of access to information under the control of the police in accordance with the principles that information should be available to the public.
  • Exemptions from this right of access should be limited and specific and decisions on disclosure should be reviewed independently
  • To protect the privacy of individuals

The Act also allows individuals to make privacy complaints should they believe a member of a police service has violated their privacy rights.

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act also enables individuals to correct personal information or attach a statement of disagreement to a record held by the police. Should you wish to exercise this right, either fill out the application form below or contact the Belleville Police Service Freedom of Information Unit for instructions.

REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION ACCESS/CORRECTION

(UNDER THE MUNICIPAL FREEDOM OF INFORMATION & PROTECTION OF PRIVACY ACT)

Pursuant to the Municipal Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (the Act), individuals can attend in person at the Belleville Police Service in order to make a request for information or correction to a record. Requests can also be submitted in writing, addressed as follows:

Requests for access or correction to records must be accompanied by a $5.00 Application Fee. Fee  may be paid in exact change by cash,  Interac/Debit,  Visa or MasterCard, cheque made payable to Belleville Police Service.

Under the Act, the institution has 30 days to respond to a request.

FOI Information Request Form

Provide as much detail as possible, i.e. date, time, location, etc. on the  FOI Information Request Form.
Produce two (2) forms of identification when submitting a request.
Payment of $5.00 Application Fee, with a receipt provided to requester.

If payment by mail, send cheque or money order made payable to the Belleville Police Service.
