Shoplifting, warrants
A 20-year-old man who stole from a north end business over the past week is facing criminal charges after returning to the scene of the alleged crime.
Shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the establishment after employees recognized a male inside the store as a shoplifter from an incident several days previous.
Police located the suspect a short time later and confirmed he was also wanted on an outstanding warrant from Belleville police for failing to attend court.
Malachai Warner, 20, was charged with theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with probation. He was released from custody with a November 28 court date.
Three charged, officer injured, cruisers damaged
A trio of thieves from Marlbank are facing charges after allegedly stealing from a store then attempting to push through a police dragnet over the weekend.
Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday police were called to a north end business after employees spotted two groups of people wandering through isles and stealing merchandise.
As police were arriving at the scene the suspects piled into a black truck and drove away from the scene.
Officers caught up and boxed in the vehicle on Mineral Road, however the driver attempted to ram free from the rolling blockade. The vehicle eventually was stopped and three people were taken into custody.
During the driver’s arrest, he fought with several officers. One of the arresting officers sustained a minor injury. Three cruisers sustained damage as a result of the incident.
Charged in relation to this incident are the following individuals:
- Rachel Nathella Star Sweet, 28, of Marlbank was charged with failing to comply with a probation order and theft under $5,000. Sweet was released on conditions with a November 21, 2024 court date;
- Matthew French, 33, of Marlbank was charged with two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and theft under $5,000. French was released on conditions with a November 21, 2024 court date;
Devon Dunkley, 28, of Marlbank was charged with five counts of assaulting police, assault with the intent to resist arrest, obstruct a police officer, flight from police, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to comply with a probation order and theft under $5,000. Dunkley was held for a court hearing on video on Sunday and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is slated for late November for a bail hearing.
Impaired driver arrested
Belleville police arrested and charged a 26-year-old Quinte West woman with a drunk driving charge after an incident on North Front Street early Sunday morning.
Around 3 a.m. a motorist called police after spotting another driver who was believed to be impaired. The caller advised the female driver, who was driving erratically, had pulled onto the property of a North Front Street business and urinated behind a dumpster before getting back in her vehicle and continuing to drive.
Officers caught up to the vehicle and, following an investigation, arrested the female driver.
Charged with having more than the legal limit of alcohol in her blood is Amber Lee Thornton, 26, of Quinte West.
Thornton was released with a November court date.
