Police Constable - New Recruit

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated continuous learning, a commitment to volunteer work, and with ties to the community by virtue of having lived, attended school, worked or have family/friends living in Belleville and the local surrounding area. 

Applicants must have an Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate obtained through the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. For more information on the steps involved to obtain an OACP Certificate, please refer to the OACP Certificate Process Information Sheet

All current and past military police must apply through our new Police Constable – New Recruit process, not as an Experienced Officer. 

 

Applicants for the Belleville Police Service position of Police Constable must meet or surpass the following minimum requirements and standards:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Be at least 18 years of age. 
  • Possess a Grade 12 graduation diploma or equivalent or post-secondary education at an accredited college or university as an adult student as a minimum.
  • Post-secondary education is considered an asset.
  • Possess a valid Class G driver’s license and suitable driving record.
  • Possess a valid standard or emergency First Aid and CPR Level C certificates.
  • Possess a complete and valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate. 
  • Be in good health (physically and mentally fit) and meet the physical, mental and medical requirements of the OACP and Belleville Police Service. 
  • Have no criminal record for which a pardon has not been received.
  • Be of good moral character and habits meaning that you are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity.

In addition to the minimum requirements, applicants for the position of constable must also possess certain essential competencies and local skills, knowledge, abilities, motives, behaviours, or attitudes to ensure successful performance on the job. Recruitment timelines for Police Constable:

The Belleville Police Service conducts their Police Constable – New Recruit hiring process four times a year, based on the Ontario Police College (OPC) intakes. Please be advised that we commence our hiring process shortly thereafter application closing dates and no action will be taken on candidates’ files until such time. Only candidates who meet organizational needs of the service will be selected to participate in our process. The timelines for our hiring processes are as follows:

  • Fall (September) OPC Intake: Posted in February 2025 with a closing date in April 2025. The process takes 3 – 4 months to complete in its entirety after closing date. Offers of employment are made in July 2025 for an August 2025 BPS start date, prior to attending September 2025 OPC.
  • Winter (December) OPC Intake: typically posted in May 2025 with a closing date in July 2025. The process takes 3 – 4 months to complete in its entirety after closing date. Offers of employment are made in October 2025 for a November 2025 BPS start date, prior to attending December OPC.
  • Spring (March) OPC Intake: Posted in July 2025 with a closing date in September 2025. The process takes 3 – 4 months to complete in its entirety after closing date. Offers of employment are made in January 2026 for a February 2026 BPS start date, prior to attending March 2026 OPC.
  • Summer (June) OPC Intake: Posted in October 2025 with a closing date in December 2025. The process takes 3 – 4 months to complete in its entirety after closing date. Offers of employment are made in April 2026 for a May 2026 BPS start date, prior to attending June 2026 OPC.

Contingent on space at Ontario Police College, some candidates may be offered a position for the following OPC Intake.

 

Recruitment steps for Police Constable include:

  1. Application Submission Review
  2. Written Assessments – (Pre-Background and Local Focus Questionnaires)
  3. Fitness Assessments – Belleville Police Service utilizes the Ontario Police Fitness Award (OPFA) Pin Program for our Constable Selection. This process is overseen by an insured third-party. The assessment consists of: Push-Up, Trunk Forward FlexionCore Endurance Shuttle Run (it is a bona fide requirement that candidates must meet level seven)
  4. Essential Competency Interview
  5. Executive Leader Interview
  6. Psychological Assessment
  7. Comprehensive Background Investigation (education, employment, personal history, credit and reference checks, as well as home visits)
  8. Third-party medical examination
