The Belleville Police Service Property Unit is responsible for cataloging and storing all exhibits and found property collected by the Service. The Property Unit can be contacted at 613-966-0882 Ext 3050, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Protecting your property

Keep an inventory of your possessions recording information such as make, model and serial numbers that will help identify your property. Take photographs of your property.

Use our Bicycle Descriptor Sheet to record record important details about the make and model of your bicycle to help us identify if the need arises.  

Reporting Lost or Stolen Property

In the event of a break and enter, do NOT touch anything and contact police immediately. Provide the police with specific descriptors of the stolen property.

In the event that your wallet is lost or stolen report the loss or theft to the police using the non-emergency number 613-966-0882. In addition, notify all the pertinent agencies regarding the credit cards contained within the wallet. Service Ontario should be notified so that a replacement drivers licence can be issued.

If your bicycle is stolen contact the police and provide them with all known descriptors. Please see the attached form that outlines the important descriptors to record.

Note – found property is held for 90 days at which time it can be lawfully disposed of if an owner has not been determined and/or if the property remains unclaimed.

Lost/Stolen Canadian Passports

In the event that your Canadian passport is lost or stolen you do not report it to the local police. Passport holders are directed to notify the Passport Program immediately. Reports can be submitted by phone at 1-800-567-6868 or in person at the nearest Service Canada passport office.

Seized property

All property seized by the police or held as evidence can only be released with the authorization of the investigating officer. In accordance with the Police Services Act property in the possession of the Police Service that is the subject of court proceedings cannot be released until thirty days after the conclusion of the court proceedings.

Firearms

Firearms seized and held by police will only be released at a pre-scheduled appointment, scheduled through the Property Unit. When retrieving your firearm(s) you will be required to produce a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence and any pertinent registration certificates. If the firearm is a restricted weapon you will be required to produce an Authorization to Transport (ATT) from the Chief Firearms Officer. You can apply for an ATT by calling 1-800-731-4000.

Police Auctions

The Police Services Act allows police services to dispose of unclaimed property through a public auction. 

All proceeds from the auction sales go into the Belleville Police Service Board’s In-Trust Account and can be used for service-related purposes as designated by the board.
