Driveway Paving Scam

The Belleville Police Service has received several calls between 03 – 06 October 2023 regarding potential driveway paving scams. People are being solicited at their homes to have their driveways paved at a very inexpensive rate. In several instances, the quality of the work has been reported to police to be of very poor quality. Anyone who experiences suspicious activity relating to this investigation is asked to call the Belleville Police Service. Residents are encouraged to research the company which may include reference checks of previous jobs before entering into a contract. 

Impaired Driving

On the 6^th of October 2023 at 8:55 pm, Belleville police stopped a vehicle on North Front Street after observing the vehicle driving erratically and failing to stop for a red light. While speaking to the driver, police observed open alcohol in the vehicle and could smell alcohol coming from the driver. The driver was issued a roadside breath test, which registered a fail. The driver was arrested and transported to the Belleville Police Service where he then refused to provide breath samples. The driver, 23-year-old Navjot Singh of Belleville was charged with refusal to comply with a demand. His vehicle was impounded for seven days and his licence was suspended for 90 days. Singh was released on an Undertaking with a court date in October.

Speeding/ Driving under Suspension

On the 8^th of October 2023 at 8 pm, a vehicle was stopped at Dundas Street West and Brock Street regarding a speeding infraction.  Further investigation revealed that the driver was suspended from driving under the Highway Traffic Act.  The 48-year-old driver from Belleville was charged with speeding and driving under suspension.  He was issued a traffic court date in December.

Drive while suspended

On the 8^th of October 2023 at 10 pm, an officer on patrol noted a vehicle which had sustained recent front-end damage travelling near North Front Street and College Street.  The officer stopped the vehicle to investigate the damage.  During the investigation, the driver was found to be a suspended driver and one of the passengers was found to be wanted by police in another jurisdiction.  Both the driver and the wanted male were arrested on scene.  The wanted passenger was turned over without incident to the nearby policing agency.  The 40-year-old female driver from Belleville was charged with driving while under suspension and issued a December traffic court date.  The involved vehicle was seized for 45 days.    

Obstructing Peace Officer

On the 8^th of October 2023 at 9 pm, Belleville police officers were conducting an investigation in the area of Moira Street and Elgin Street.  A male who was under the influence of alcohol and had nothing to do with the investigation began causing issues and was agitating everyone involved.  The male was directed to leave multiple times but refused and as a result was arrested.  Dylan Taylor, 29-years-old of Belleville was charged with obstructing a peace officer and released on an Undertaking with a November court date. 

Stunt Driving and Licence Suspension

On the 9^th of October 2023 at 8:30 pm, a Belleville police officer was conducting speed enforcement on Old Highway #2 and Old Kingston Road.  The officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.  The vehicle’s speed was measured to be in excess of 40 km/h over the posted speed limit.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver identified.  During the investigation, the driver was observed to be under the influence of alcohol and failed a screening device.  As a result, the driver was arrested.  The driver was transported to the Belleville Police Service and provided breath samples which resulted in a 3-day driver’s licence suspension.  The driver was charged with stunt driving and their driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days.  The 27-year-old Belleville resident was released with a December traffic court date.

Driving while Prohibited

On the 9^th of October 2023 at 6:30 am, a Belleville Police officer stopped a vehicle at Chatham Street and Victoria Avenue.  The driver was unable to provide a driver’s licence.  The officer began an investigation into the identity of the driver and learned that they were prohibited from driving in Canada.  Dustin Cole, 43-years-old of Belleville was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.  He was released on an Undertaking with a November court date.  Additionally, the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
