Break and enter     

Belleville Police are looking to the public for assistance following a break-and-enter to a home in the city’s east end in which $4,500 in valuables were stolen.

Officers were called to the Pine Street home around 1 p.m. Thursday after the resident arrived home to find several items taken, including a vintage clock and a set of moose antlers. An investigation into the incident revealed that a number of people had access to the residence over the past several weeks.

Keep an eye on accounts

During the past several weeks, Belleville police have seen an uptick in the number of bank-related frauds involving the addition of payees to bank accounts and compromised credit card accounts.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday a Belleville woman reported her banking information was compromised and a $550 charge was placed on her credit card.

In this particular incident the bank reimbursed the complainant and locked her account to prevent further frauds. At this time an investigation is continuing and it is unknown how culprits gained access to the card and account.

Belleville Police would like to remind the public of the following tips to prevent similar fraud from occurring:

• Monitor your accounts and activity closely

Make sure you know what is going in and out of your accounts, even with small transactions.

• Guard your information online, only provide to trusted vendors

Be sure to maintain security software on your computers and avoid entering personal information (such as financial information and log-in credentials) into public computers.

• Think twice about sharing your information

Be cautious of calls or emails that request sensitive information. Never give out confidential information unless you know it is from a trusted and verified source.
