Attempted Fraud
On the 22nd of February, an 87-year-old Belleville resident had set up an appointment with what he believed was a company subsidized by the federal/provincial government offering home efficiency rebates.
A male claiming to be a representative of the company attended the victim’s residence which was in the city’s north end and walked past the victim into the household uninvited. The sales representative then used aggressive sales tactics and at times, refused to leave the household upon request. The victim’s daughter attended the residence and was able to intervene before any documents were signed but it was believed that the suspect was attempting to get the elderly male to enter into a financial contract for a large loan to install a hot water tank, promising government rebates in return.
The suspect was driving a silver KIA with an out of province licence plate. The suspect refused to identify himself or the company he worked for.
It is believed the suspect is involved in a larger fraud scheme focused on targeting and confusing senior citizens via online advertisements, attending their homes and then locking them into large loans with high interest rates. The work promised then either doesn’t get completed or is not installed correctly and the company refuses to return to remedy the issue.
Police are reminding citizens to be vigilant for these fraudulent schemes which often utilize pressure tactics.

Theft of motor vehicle
On the 23rd of February at 9:00pm, Belleville Police received a call regarding a stolen vehicle. Police spoke with the complainant who advised that he was selling his vehicle on line and met a potential buyer for his black BMW SUV in the parking lot of a business in Belleville’s north end. The male suspect asked to take the vehicle for a test drive. The suspect got in the BMV, left the parking lot and never returned. The suspect was originally dropped off in a silver Mercedes SUV, which also left the area. The male suspect is described as 5’7” tall, dark skin and well dressed with short hair. Motor vehicle drove into business
On the 24th of February at 4:36am, officers were called to a business on North Front St. regarding a vehicle that drove into the building. Officers arrived on scene and observed a vehicle which had contacted the wall of the business causing the glass to break in one of the business windows. The collision involved slow speeds and there were no injuries as a result of the incident. Police completed an investigation and there were no charges.
Motor vehicle collision
On the 25th of February at 9:06pm, Police and EMS attended a motor vehicle collision on Farnham Rd involving two vehicles. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and the roadway was closed for a brief period of time. Two people were taken to BGH with minor injuries, while a third person was assessed and cleared by EMS at the scene. Neither vehicles were drivable and were towed from the scene. As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old Belleville resident was charged with Careless Driving. The driver was issued a Provincial Offence Notice.
